YEAR-END PROFICIENCY RESULTS
The final MAP short cycle assessment results were a welcome sight! After laboring for the entire school year, 15 out of 16 or 93.75% of my students who were enrolled for the Full Academic Year (FAY) were proficient in math! The MAP results showed that 14 of 16 or 87.5% (FAY) were proficient in both reading and language usage! These percentages include those students with IEPs and those who have a SAT plan. Our class goal at the beginning of the school year was to have 100% of the 6th graders proficient in all subject areas. We came very close to reaching our goal with only one FAY student falling short in math by six points and two FAY students falling short in reading and language by just a few points, as well.
DATA
Prior to each MAP test, every student reviewed his/her previous scores on the short cycle assessment. Each student set an individual goal for every subject area. Those students who met or exceeded their personal goals chose a prize from the Goody Box. This activity reinforced the fact that the MAP scores are important and allowed an excellent opportunity for students to practice personal goal setting and use positive performance supports.
MATH
We are focusing on the strand of Data Analysis and Probability. This strand is covered at the very end of our text book. Prior to testing, we jumped ahead to ensure that the assessed standards were covered. Now we are covering other essential learning standards in the strand of data analysis and probability.
Students are improving their reading comprehension strategies. We are focusing on the essential learning standards of author’s purpose and point of view.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students are discovering the role played during the Renaissance era by the following individuals: Leonardo da Vinci, Martin Luther and Michelangelo. Students are also learning about life in the lower class during the Renaissance.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Students are learning how to craft narrative essays. They are required to produce a five paragraph essay.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
The recent Tri-Annual meeting was fraught with techniques and strategies to help our Special Education Department function more efficiently and effectively. Additionally, new requirements and regulations were discussed by the PED staff. I have shared some of the most pressing changes with our staff in an effort to remain in compliance and meet the needs of our special needs student population.
