COUNSELING/GUIDANCE
Several students have already
received scholarships! In addition, they are continuing to apply for even more.
Students planning to attend EAC and
WNMU have actually registered for classes! This is something that I have been
working toward since I first became counselor. I wanted for our students to be registered
for college classes—not just enrolled---prior to leaving high school. I believe
that this will greatly increase our students’ success rate in college. They
will not have to stand in long registration lines and had the benefit of making
daunting decisions regarding college schedules in a small group setting with
guidance from a real live person! Representatives from both institutions
visited Animas High School to meet with students and complete the registration
process.
Eighth Grade Orientation will be
held at 5:00 in the evening on May 12, 2009. Along with their parents, students
will choose classes for next year and complete a tentative Four Year Next Step
Plan.
Seniors will complete their Final
Next Step Plans on May 5, 2009 and grades 8th – 11th will
update their annual Next Step Plans by the end of the school year. Students
will also enter preferences for next year’s schedules. This year I hope to use
a JMAC program to allow students to choose classes. Hopefully, the scheduling
will go much more quickly and smoothly as a result. In addition, and perhaps
most importantly, the students will have a voice and a choice in their
schedules.
Individual counseling continues
based on IEPs, SAT referrals and teacher/parent requests. Fifteen elementary students
and eight middle/high school students are seen on a weekly basis. Others are
seen bi-weekly or on a monitor basis.
GRADE REPORTING
Fourth Nine Weeks Report Cards will
go out on June 4, 2009. Individual MAP results will be included in this
mailing.
