Our Community

Westward Ho! Sparsely settled during the movement west, Animas is an isolated ranching and farming community characterized by a harsh terrain and barbed wire, and populated only by those hardy enough to withstand the Chihuahuan Desert. Located in the most southwestern part of Hidalgo County, the Boot Heel of New Mexico, you will find us just west of the Continental Divide and about 30 miles from the county seat of Lordsburg.

Animas, meaning “lost souls” or “spirit,” is rich in history and never short of legendary tales. According to local lore, Animas was built upon an ancient Indian village when the Spanish settled the area in 1753 in their quest for precious metals. Animas is truly a community where visitors can get a taste and feel for the past. Devoid of sidewalks, fast food, and big-box retail, we are a community who raises our children together, celebrates together, and mourns together.

Remnants of the Past

Shakespeare Ghost Town
One of the last remaining ghost towns located along the Butterfield-Overland Stage Trail, is a mining boom-town that survived until 1932. Currently owned and operated by the Hill family, Shakespeare is a national, historic site offering regular tours and living history reenactments four times a year. Be sure to check here first for details regarding operating hours and reenactment dates.

Lordsburg Walking Tour
Take a walk on the wild west side, and visit up to 15 historical buildings and sites.
